R&CA MEDIA RELEASE: Australia's hospitality industry wins in border change announcement
After months of intense advocacy from Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA), the Federal Government has today announced that Australia will change international border arrangements from 1 December 2021.
R&CA welcomes this news for international students, skilled migrants and especially those who apply for working holiday visas, as it will help to stem the staffing crisis that is currently plaguing Australia's hospitality industry.
A full list of eligible visas can be found here.
“Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, Australia’s hospitality sector was desperate for staff. This was exacerbated by lockdown when international arrivals were barred from entering the country,” said R&CA Chief Executive Wes Lambert.
“Although the industry still has a long way to go until we reach pre-pandemic levels of staff – this is a much welcomed and much needed announcement”.
“Safely allowing these workers back into Australia will turbocharge the local economy and help to keep venues operators so that Australians can enjoy their favourite restaurant or café,” said Mr Lambert.
Mr Lambert said R&CA will continue to advocate for changes to make working in Australia easier.
