Australians Still Dining Out: What the Latest ABS Data Tells Us About Hospitality Spend
Posted: 03 August 2025
Newly released ABS Retail Trade figures show a clear trend: Australians continue to support the hospitality industry, even as cost-of-living pressures persist.
For the financial year ending June 2025, Cafés, Restaurants and Takeaway Food Services recorded $66.273 billion in turnover, marking a 2.5% increase year-on-year.
This growth underscores the enduring role hospitality plays in Australian life — not just as a service, but as a social and cultural touchpoint.
“The year-on-year comparison is the most accurate and reliable measure of performance,” said John Hart OAM, National President of Restaurant & Catering Australia.
“It confirms what we see on the ground — Australians are still eating out and supporting their local venues.”
While the sector has faced significant headwinds, including staff shortages, rising input costs and economic uncertainty, consumer behaviour has remained consistent. Dining out is still seen as a valuable part of life, even if habits and budgets are shifting.
However, the figures also come with a caution.
“This growth shouldn’t be confused with a full recovery,” Hart said.
“Turnover is up, but menu prices haven’t kept pace with inflation, and many operators are wearing the cost to remain competitive.”
This means that while revenue is improving, profit margins are tightening — a trend that’s putting pressure on business sustainability across the board.
R&CA continues to push for reform in key areas including:
Workforce development and training
Cost and compliance reduction
Policy that reflects real-world operating conditions
“This is an industry powered by hardworking Australians, contributing to jobs, tourism, and the economy,” Hart added.
“We need policy and support that recognises those contributions and helps secure the future of hospitality.”
As the peak national body for the industry, R&CA will continue to provide members with up-to-date data insights, strong advocacy, and practical resources to navigate what lies ahead.
